National Geographic Channel and Samsung rely on projectiondesign® in development of latest TV commercial at On Sight

National Geographic Channel (NGC) and Samsung 3D commercial for Anglo Filming achieved at...

Fredrikstad, Norway, 10-12 September 2010 – cineo82 3D projectors from projectiondesign® have just been used by On Sight in the final grading of the National Geographic Channel (NGC) and Samsung 3D commercial for Anglo Filming. This was achieved inside the world-class 3D SGO Mistika Suite at On Sight in Soho, London. Another set of cineo82 3D projectors are also to be found at On Sight’s new 3D Centre located at Shepperton Studios, UK.

The projectors, distributed through RGB communications, were supplied, installed and aligned in early 2010 by post production specialists, Kaurus® who also provided the projection screens and custom filter systems for the multi-standard 3D grading suite.

The commercial was created in support of Samsung’s ‘Planet First’ initiative for greener products and sustainable solutions. The spot depicts examples of innovative products like the Samsung solar powered mobile phone. The 3D captures the natural beauty of the location as well as Samsung’s latest product designs.

During post production, all client attended 3D on-line work and mastering was carried out in the HD Lab’s 3D Mistika projection suite. "Apart from the normal complexities of 3D, which the 3D Mistika Suite dealt with easily, it was also necessary to view the commercial as it was being made on a number of different displays including their grading-quality projection source, a calibrated TV monitor and the actual Samsung product," says David Cox, colourist and operator at On Sight.

“We were very happy with the post process and the large viewing room was useful to allow clients to fully appreciate the 3D technology,” adds Paul Darter, Producer.

And the last word goes to Anders Løkke, International Marketing and Communications Manager at projectiondesign who explains: “We’re very happy to work with our partners Kaurus, On Sight and RGB Communications who all made this happen! It’s a real achievement to be involved in a project that reflects the application in which our projectors were created to be used for. Being associated with National Geographic Channel who has a phenomenal and worldwide recognition in photography is a tremendous achievement indeed.”

Further information on this project is detailed below:

On Sight Client: is Anglo Filming
Job Title: Samsung and National Geographic Channel (NGC) 3D commercial

The commercial was filmed in Tenerife in April 2010 for Samsung and National Geographic Channel. It involved a complicated week long, multi location shoot with up to 40 crew. 3D filming was using two Genesis cameras on an Element Technika mirror rig.

Producer: Paul Darter, Anglo FIlming
Director: Roopinder Sood
DOP: Brendan McGinty

Creative Solutions Director: Louise Friend, National Geographic Channel (NGC)
Client: Samsung

The rushes were recorded to 2xSRW1 at 4:4:4 at 29.97fps.

On Sight’s HD Lab handled the media after it was eventually flown back following being stranded along with kit and crew due to Volcanic ash.

HD Lab captured the rushes for offline and sent files out to the Director to cut. HD Lab then provided HD and 3D conforms for the online, VFX and compositors.

David Cox performed all the complicated composition on the 3D Mistika and all client attended 3D on-line work and mastering was carried out in the HD Lab’s 3D Mistika projection suite.

SGO launches Mistika Live at IBC 2010

Revolutionary stereoscopic 3D production tool, Mistika Live delivers impressive live performance in...

IBC, RAI, 9 September 2010: SGO unveils Mistika Live, its powerful new stereoscopic 3D production tool that was recently used in the impressive live stereoscopic 3D broadcasting of the latest Metallica, Hail & Barón Rojo concerts at “Rock in Rio” live music event in Madrid. Mistika Live, launching at IBC 2010, was involved from the stereoscopic 3D production stage where twin Sony Ex3 cameras were used to film the bands, with the images being fed via Mistika Live to correct the geometry and colour, before being fed to a large viewing screen. A JVC monitor, a Z400 CPU and a DVS plaque, including Mistika Live’s powerful software, were the key components required on the set. SGO teamed up with CEV, Superior Communication, the Image and Sound School, in the high profile joint venture.

Mistika Live, SGO’s latest innovative development, extends the market leading stereoscopic 3D post production tools of Mistika into the production environment. The application is a specialised Mistika hardware and software configuration which is also available as part of the toolset in Mistika Version 5.

Mistika Live enables Mistika's stereoscopic geometry correction and colour correction tools to be used either on-set as a preview facility while shooting, or in the demanding live environment where camera feeds are corrected "on the fly". Taking a stereo feed from dual HD-SDI inputs, Mistika Live can make geometry adjustments to match the stereo camera line-up, as well as colour matching, to correct any colour differences that arise, between the cameras. The result can be viewed in real-time, live and in 3D.

Mistika Live is the ultimate viewing station in a stereoscopic 3D shoot environment. As a rule, stereoscopic 3D cameras are set to shoot in a "parallel” configuration, which means they are converged on infinity. Although this provides the most flexible set-up for further production, the resulting images are hard to watch on-set because all objects in the scene will be in a negative parallax which means the image will appear to be emerging from the screen, due to the camera's convergence setting. This is normally corrected in post production with a simple convergence shift, however, Mistika Live allows this to happen live on set, thus making the shots easy to evaluate at the time.

Furthermore, Mistika Live allows for additional colour corrections, with or without the use of a Look Up Table (LUT) to correctly transform the cameras' outputs. The feeds to Mistika Live and its corrections can be maintained as HD MPEG 4 Dailies. These can then either be used for reference, or edited together on Mistika Live's timeline, in order to convey the progress and status of the production as well as highlight any other stereoscopic issues that might affect the edit. All corrections can then be exported to a Mistika post production system to ensure the finishing process is streamlined and seamless.

“The main focus of Mistika Live is to provide a valuable tool, that not only enables the director to watch a live shoot, but to also to make the required corrections. Mistika Live presents a significantly cost-effective and post production time-saving application. The pre-visualisation option within Mistika Live will certainly facilitate the creative process in both production and post production.” Miguel Angel Doncel, CEO of SGO confirms. Miguel adds: “From my point of view, Mistika Live is an absolute must-have application for production workflows, as it not only enables the director to analyse and fix all the stereo 3D details including disparities and alignments in real-time, but it also tests and prepares the footage for the postproduction process.”

Mistika adds direct support for Avid’s DNxHD MXF format and greatly improves workflows

The addition of DNxHD continues to make Mistika the ideal system for all online and DI...

IBC, RAI, Amsterdam, 9 September 2010: In a continuing raft of developments for its Mistika DI and on-line finishing system, SGO has added direct support for Avid’s DNxHD MXF format, with the unique ability to both directly capture the format, and render and write back to disk in the same format. Along with Mistika's open storage, the addition of DNxHD continues to make Mistika the ideal system for all on-line and DI post-production workflows, and now provides direct media interchange with Avid’s range of offline editing systems. When viewed alongside Mistika’s impressive accomplishments for auto-conforming, editorial, grading, effects, and stereoscopic 3D, the addition of media interchange with Avid’s DNxHD format further extends the scope of creative capability Mistika represents.

Stereoscopic projects have become a major production focus, and demand a high-level of creative power and capability. Often, filming is performed using a stereoscopic rig set to a parallel configuration, which implies that scenes will be difficult to view until a post convergence change is added. With Mistika having the amazing ability to work directly from a cameras' RAW files without any importing or cross-conversion overheads, the addition of DNxHD format workflow, means it is now possible to simply export a side-by-side single stream of DNxHD files ready for offline editing in Avid, directly from the live dual camera input.

SGO’s Technical Director, Javier Moreno explains further. “From this example, the Mistika artist can continue to refine the rushes, by further correcting the camera line ups, adding colour grades and any other "fixes" that are required. When the offline editing process has been completed, Mistika can conform from the material and settings it already has, which means that the conform benefits from direct access to the full resolution original camera RAW files, as well as all of the corrections that have been achieved, both before and after the editing session commenced.”

From the perspective of the offline editor, the headaches and time-overheads of cross converting stereoscopic camera raw files prior to import are entirely avoided. Instead, the editor works directly from single stream files that are natively supported by the edit system and have stereoscopic alignment, and even colour transforms, already embedded. The result is an efficient and streamlined process. The main advantage of the new comform tool in Mistika is the capability to be able to start the post production process in parallell with the offline editing, because all VFX, colour grading and stereo adjustments can now be re-conformed for new EDLs automatically. Previously, many of these tasks had to wait until until the EDL editing had been completed, involving extensive manual work. Thanks to the new workflow in parallell, the total production time will now be reduced.

Mistika generates direct DCP output for DCI screening

By being able to directly create DCP files at high speed, Mistika can massively reduce the time it...

Madrid, Spain, 7 September 2010: In yet another exciting development to be unveiled at IBC 2010, SGO announces that Mistika has added support for direct export to a Digital Cinema Package (DCP).

This new direct export capability allows the rapid creation of digital cinema compliant files ready for viewing and testing in a digital cinema environment. Currently, the DCP process is a time consuming one, requiring the post production finishing tool to export a common file format, such as a TIFF 16 (DCM format), to an external drive, ready to be imported into a DCP conversion facility. By being able to directly create DCP files at high speed, Mistika can massively reduce the time it takes to create a digital "check print" and in many cases, Mistika can create the DCP file faster than copying TIFF 16 files to a hard drive.

With the global expansion in take up of Digital Cinema for theatre screenings, the need for fast checking of any DCP output has become of major concern. Mistika’s new ability to directly produce a DCP deliverable assists in all aspects of the delivery chain, means that any challenges with the project, can be found and assessed well in advance of the final output. The final output can then be generated directly from the on-line material, without the need for yet more data transfers with the additional potential for error that they can present.

Geoff Mills, Director of Sales and Operations at SGO UK asserts: “This is a very exciting addition to Mistika for our customers. The whole workflow can now be maintained in-house, and can enable our customers to confidently guarantee all the final deliverable requirements to their clients.”

The Mistika post production system is a flexible high-end post production and live on set system capable of SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and stereoscopic 3D with real-time ARRI, Red camera and other native data workflows. It seamlessly integrates timeline-based editing, conforming, infinite-layer compositing, colour grading and image restoration all in one complete system with various toolsets working together in the timeline. SGO is showcasing new toolset and workflow developments in Mistika at IBC this year as well as launching Mistika Live in Hall 6, Stand 6.A11.

Madrid, Spain, 7 September 2010: In a development that parallels the expanding importance of Digital Cinematography within the creative media industry SGO announces its Mistika Post and DI finishing system gains yet another exciting development launching at IBC 2010 with added support for ARRI, Silicon Images and Phantom RAW file formats.

Mistika can immediately support ARRIRAW files created with the ARRI’s already well established D-21 camera, and can also support files created with the exciting new ARRI ALEXA Camera as it becomes available to the market with RAW capability enabled. Mistika can already work with the ALEXA’s ProRes image format output, and with added RAW support, continues to make Mistika the working environment of choice for the on-line post-production of quality images.

The live and real-time manipulation of RAW image data, benefits from Mistika's new, high performance and high quality debayering algorithms, which increase transcoding speed, while guaranteeing the highest possible quality directly from the camera's "RAW" files. Coupled with Mistika's powerful colour grading, compositing and editing environment, the direct native support for multiple RAW file formats provides an unbeatable combination, in terms of creative freedom, ultimate quality, and efficient workflow.

“Live real-time RAW processing is a key feature for cameras such as ARRI, Phantom, RED and so forth. Being able to alter the parameters in a non-destructive way, and without the need for any additional hardware is a great ability. Alexa is big industry news, and is showing just what Digital Cinematography is really capable of. Real-time RAW workflows in Mistika are key to maximising the final image quality from such cameras. Shooting on the ARRI ALEXA and post producing on Mistika is an incredible combination.” Steve Shaw, CEO of Light Illusion and one of SGO’s key partner’s states.

Mistika has also been an excellent finishing tool for productions filmed with the RED One camera for a couple of years now, allowing real-time direct support of the RED RAW r3d file format, including access to camera parameters, rescaling and colour correction. Adding yet further RAW support keeps Mistika at the forefront of creative image manipulation.

The Mistika post production system is a flexible high-end post production and live on set system capable of SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and stereoscopic 3D with real-time ARRI, RED camera and other native data workflows. This enables post production work to start immediately without any conversion delays, space duplication issues or processing time. Mistika also boasts superior de-grain and noise reduction. The system retains the image details with state-of-the-art colour manipulation tools.

Mistika Version 5 Features summarised as:

This makes Mistika both effortless and beneficial to integrate into existing facilities. Internally, Mistika also uses open formats at the highest bit-depth quality, with true 16 bit floating point per channel processes, HDR and 8K+ resolution support. By utilising standard SAN technology, but with clever application development, Mistika makes the most of inherent SAN capabilities.
