Referred to as “The Blue Heart of Siberia”, Lake Baikal is the deepest lake on earth and magically lures different cultures to coexist and fuse peacefully within its realm of mind-blowing beauty. Moscow-based RSS Production set out to capture the essence of this unique area in the exquisite new documentary film “Baikal” directed by Alexander Dukhon. The compelling portrayal was entirely produced and post produced in 4K native Stereo 3D using SGO’s Mistika technology at RSS Studios. Post involved editing, colour grading, sound design and CG and took two months to complete. Native stereoscopic 3D optimisation was successfully accomplished in Mistika by Daniel Ovrutsky.
“Using the industry’s most powerful visual formats and resolutions that Mistika can easily muster and deliver, helps us to plunge audiences into a high quality film such as Baikal. The visionary technology we now have at our disposal in productions such as these, play a vital part in exposing viewers to the beauty of stunningly remote locations such as this ancient Siberian lake, bringing intense clarity like never before.” states director Alexander Dukhon, “Our aim is to make Baikal the first of many future documentary series dedicated to awe-inspiring places on our planet, and at the same time using the world’s most innovative technologies, such as Mistika, which contribute enormously to enrich our work.”
RSS Production invested in Mistika in 2013 predominantly for colour grading and finishing. Mistika was put straight to work on various projects including blockbuster Stalingrad, directed by Fedor Bondarchuk. It was heralded as Russia’s first movie ever to be completely produced with Stereo 3D technology and digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® 3D format.
Baikal’s Filming commenced in February last year with eight adventurous RSS Production film crew members embarking on a gruelling ten-day trip through the Lake Baikal region. Located in central Asia, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and also contains approximately twenty percent of the globe’s unfrozen fresh surface water. The shoot took place in just seven days in extreme weather conditions of minus thirty degrees Celsius with few sunlight hours over the short winter days. The team made their way along the lake’s western coast, visiting Olkhon Island and Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Republic of Buryatia in Russia.
Baikal’s Footage was shot using RED Epics and Stereotec 3D rigs, including RSS Production’s unique set-up on a small sized sightseeing helicopter for aerial footage. “This approach makes filming native stereoscopic 3D aerials much easier, avoiding the need to use large vehicles with massive stabilisation systems, and reduces costs as well.” noted Alexander. In addition, the soundtrack music was especially written and composed from scratch and produced exclusively for the film. It was creatively intertwined into the sound design to reflect the eerie atmosphere of Lake Baikal’s land and spirit. The film warmly depicts the human element in a sub-zero and unearthly landscape by sharing endearing stories of the local people whose hearts belong to it.

Mistika’s Brand Grows in Strength in New French Venture
SGO expands its European horizons further with the launch of a new office in France which will open its doors next month to serve a thriving creative community. Sergio Ochoa, credited with over 25-years as colourist and post production veteran, has been appointed by SGO to head the new Parisian-based subsidiary. With premises based in central Paris, SGO France will host Mistika colour grading and finishing services and support.
“Strategically, it is of great importance for SGO to have a world-class location in France,” says Miguel Angel Doncel, CEO of SGO. “The new office will benefit our regional customers, and further extend SGO’s global philosophy to provide outstanding customer service. Sergio is an asset to SGO and his experience is an immense advantage, he is the perfect person to head this division.”
Sergio Ochoa, Director of SGO France confirms, “I have known SGO for many years, as a Mistika customer from some of the world’s top post facilities while working on well-known commercials and feature films. Opening “SGO France” is a very exciting development and I regard it as a privilege to be entrusted to manage it. I am very familiar with the French market which has been embracing Mistika for a while now, and the timing is right to set-up a permanent SGO presence in the region. With numerous key studios and post companies from abroad also basing their services in Paris, it is a great opportunity to be established here at such a vibrant and important time in the industry.”
Many leading French post companies have already invested in Mistika to provide creative solutions for film and broadcast productions. Level S3D used Mistika to post produce the Oscar-winning Mr Hublot, whereas cutting-edge visual effects house Digitaline, with Mistika at the helm, works on commercials for major brands such as M&M, Citroen, Playstation, Pepsi, as well as feature films. Furthermore, Mistika was selected at Paris’ Digimage for the entire post production of The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. In addition, Digimage also chose Mistika for the French-language feature film Asterix & Obelix: On Her Majesty’s Service with Sergio credited as Stereoscopic Post Production Supervisor on the project.
With ever increasing demand for future-ready post production solutions, SGO reported a highly successful outcome at NAB. Located in the South Hall, the popular Mistika post production systems and Mamba FX compositing software were showcased at SGO’s booth, attracting a lot of visitors, among them content creators, post facilities and widely known broadcasters. SGO’s progressive creativity and efficiency in colour grading and finishing received positive feedback resulting in new relationships, collaborations and sales.
SGO’s forward-looking quantum-leap development leads in giant strides. One of the many breathtaking highlights which amazed colourists in engaging demonstrations included SGO’s new Spatial Isolation Toolset for Mistika 8.2. It provides colourists with a number of methods to isolate individual objects within a scene, so that they can be graded separately, for example based on their depth in the scene or by metadata provided by CGI animation systems. The new features allow both the colour and the directional lighting of CGI objects to be fine-tuned in real time and in context. Find out more and watch the demos at www.sgo.es/2014/04/sgo-discloses-unique-colour-grading-tools/
Also on show was a stylish Precision Grading Panel for SGO’s Mistika made by Digital Vision, delivering an additional option to boost Mistika’s powerful colour grading feature-set even further. It was proven to be a sensation, and within hours of the show opening, an order was placed for two Precision Panels by ONSIGHT for their 4K, 3D, HD Mistika grading and finishing suites.
SGO’s affordable compositor Mamba FX made its first NAB appearance and was a smash-hit with its intuitive node-based graphic interface delivering a complete visual effects suite with unlimited compositing layers and effects, running on Windows, Linux and soon available on Mac. With the recent addition of GenArts Sapphire 7, over 250 new effects and pre-sets are accessible to users. Mamba FX tutorials were launched at the show and are available at www.mambatutorials.com
For Broadcasters, Mistika Air Ultra enables a viable and stress-tested solution with seamless integration of high-end post finishing tools for HD, Ultra HD and 8K productions. Mistika Air Ultra is capable of delivering real time and render-free colour grading and finishing processes, even at 4K 60P. Its diverse and versatile creative toolset is not restricted to 4K and is already able to provide for 8K post production pipelines.
Other exciting new features in Mistika version 8.0 this NAB included an all-new node-based compositing interface, support for Canon’s RMF, Sony’s XAVC, enhanced AAF support, ProRes 4:4:4:4 file formats, a re-branding output render module and Dolby Atmos DCP generation. Mistika’s presence on Canon’s booth played a vital part in exciting presentations demonstrating Canon’s Colour Management ACES process for Digital Motion Imaging. SGO also hosted Stream TV Networks, Inc.’s revolutionary Ultra-D™ glasses-free 3D technology marking the first time their auto-stereoscopic screens have been shown at NAB. Stunning footage of Mistika-related projects including the jaw-dropping Stalingrad 3D film trailer and David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D stunned passers-by.
News following on from NAB is that Mistika is to support Dolby® Vision™ technology. Working in close collaboration with Dolby, the capabilities are available in Mistika from version 8.2, previewed at NAB and due for release shortly after IBC. Mistika has inherently supported HDR workflows, and perfectly placed for its customers to enjoy this exciting advancement.
“NAB creates dynamic access to global markets and it’s a great sphere of energy where we meet interesting new people and provide them with the very latest technological breakthroughs to fully support their creativity.” SGO’s Director of Global Sales and Operations Geoff Mills said.
SGO will be exhibiting at Broadcast Asia 17 – 20 June at Booth 5K6-06 in the Spanish Pavilion.
