SGO in the 4K spotlight at a successful Creative Week

Creative Week has now drawn to a successful end. Thursday’s HD and Beyond sessions opened interesting debates about 4K and once again SGO was in the spotlight at a key London event about a hot topic within the creative community.

Geoff Mills, Director of Global Sales and Operations of the SGO Group spoke on the Post Perspective panel yesterday, where he made salient points about 4K positively impacting the market and how Mistika is already streets ahead of the resolution revolution. With Will Strauss as Chair, Geoff shared the discussion with ONSIGHT’s Post Production Supervisor Rik Tester and The Farm’s Technical Director and MD Dave Klafkowski. The topic covered how both The Farm and ONSIGHT have already embraced 4K a while back using Mistika. The Farm had worked the Kudos/C4 drama Utopia in 5K and ONSIGHT completed many 4K projects that include Walking With Dinosaurs, Peter Gabriel’s Back to Front and David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D, all with Mistika’s advanced 4K capabilities. “We find solutions for our customers that they can use, not only for today, but also for tomorrow.” Geoff stated and reaffirmed that Mistika’s diverse and versatile creative toolset is not restricted to 4K and is already able to provide for 8K post production pipelines. A session dedicated to David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D, which recently won a BAFTA award, followed the panel.

With Mistika technology at the helm, SGO’s Senior Product Application Specialist Sam Sheppard was also present at the event in a prime position to discuss the future and Mistika to delegates throughout the day.

Balada Triste de Trompeta (The Last Circus) finished in Mistika at Molinare, reaps awards at the Venice Film Festival

“Mistika was placed at the heart of our production process.” Ferran Piquer, Digital Cinema Manager, Molinare, Madrid.

Madrid, Spain, 22 September 2010:  SGO is proud to reveal that one of their key Madrid-based customers Molinare has recently post produced an award-winning film using Mistika.  The film titled Balada Triste de Trompeta, which translates as The Last Circus in English, has been awarded the Silver Lion and Osella Awards for best direction and screenplay by highly acclaimed film director in Spain, Alex de la Iglesia at the 67th Venice Film Festival this year.

Tornasol Film Productions produced the film and all post production was completed at Molinare with Ferran Piquer as supervisor. All the colour grading and DI work was achieved by Jorge Hernandez and Juan Ignacio Cabrera and other VFX artists namely Oscar Perea and conforming editor Marta Lucendo, using SGO’s Mistika post production system.

“With more than 600-hundred effects shots and material that was captured in five different formats, together with different archive image sequences, Mistika was placed at the heart of our production process. Mistika’s powerful performance allowed us to tune VFX integration into the film, saving a lot of precious time in modifications, transfers and re-conforming.” Explained Ferran Piquer, Digital Cinema Manager, Molinare, Madrid.

One of the Mistika VFX Artists at Molinare, Juan Ignacio Cabrera added:” The speed and flexibility that Mistika delivered, was crucial to be able to deliver on time, due to the extremely tight deadline. Mistika’s colour grading is so robust, and the system handled 24-hours of work for three solid weeks without a problem!”  Juan also presented the Mistika system at a live presentation at IBC this month at the SGO stand, attracting crowds eager to witness the powerfully impressive Mistika post system in action at the Amsterdam-based technology trade show.

The film is about two clowns,  Sergio (Antonio de la Torre) and Javier (Carlos Areces) that fall in love with the same woman, Natalia (Carolina Bang), a trapeze artist. The story is depicted over two time periods, the Spanish Civil War and the 70’s.

Mistika’s colour grading power is used by Molinare to post produce new television campaign spot La Casera

“Mistika has exceeded our expectations and outshines in grading power, particularly in this project due to its flexibility and to be able to colour grade in so many different areas.”

– Jorge Hernández, Molinare

Madrid, Spain, May 2010: SGO is delighted to report that Molinare has recently post produced an exciting new advertising campaign for La Casera, a Spanish fizzy drink, using Mistika which involved extensive colour grading. Well received by audiences throughout Spain, the spot was directed by well known Spanish Director Javier Fesser who was inspired by La Rue del Percebe cartoons by Francisco Ibáñez.

The high profile project was filmed using a Red One Camera and Canon EOS 5D. Mistika worked seamlessly with various systems and formats throughout the process ensuring a smooth workflow. Jorge Hernández, Mistika specialist overseeing colour correction at Molinare for the project confirmed:  “Mistika has exceeded our expectations and outshines in grading power, particularly in this project due to its flexibility and to be able to colour grade in so many different areas using its clever mask compositing functionality is impressive. Some of the shots required colour corrections involving chromas, skies, buildings, characters, and so forth, resulting in the desired effect combining all the various elements effortlessly.”

The visuals in the spot reminded Director Fesser of films like “Mortadelo y Filemon” and “El Milagro de P.Tinto”, with his aim of giving it a comic feel and look.  Mistika’s advanced grading capability enabled the team to achieve the required result within the specified time and against the clock. Javier Fesser expanded: “When we started to make commercials, La Casera was the reference of what we would love to do. I then approached Francisco Ibáñez’s world, and the compatibility was clearly evident. Both La Casera and Ibáñez use similar language and amongst other things, those classic commercials from La Casera have a lot in common with Ibañez. The only difference compared to a traditional film, is that La Casera is a bit shorter, but all the scenes, concepts and production design are filmic and are the same as film in essence.”

“Approaching Ibañez’s world and introducing these products, topics and conflicts that already have a lot to do with the universe that was already at la Rue 13, seems to me like the perfect marriage, they were meant for each other. “ – Director, Javier Fesser states.

The spot is currently airing on Spanish TV.
