VFX pulls are one of the most error-prone handoffs in post production: EDLs, handles, color transforms, naming conventions, delivery destinations, and review packages all have to come together perfectly, every time. This template automates the entire process from EDL to VFX house: conform, color transform, CDL application, EXR delivery, proxy generation, review upload, and timeline export, triggered automatically the moment an EDL lands in the watch folder.

Drop an EDL in. Everything else happens on its own.

What it needs, what it delivers

No surprises. Know exactly what this workflow needs and what it delivers before you import it.

Inputs

EDL file (dropped into the watch folder) and source media folder

Outputs

ACES AP0 Linear EXR sequences delivered via Signiant, ProRes HD proxy references uploaded to MediaSilo, OTIO timeline file, CDL files, and Slack notification on completion

Put it to work: how to use this template

- Source setup: Configure the Watcher node with the folder where EDLs will be dropped. Set the Folder node to point at your source media directory.

- EDL to CC: Configure the output directory where the extracted CDL files will be written. Filenames are generated automatically from the VFX shot metadata in the EDL.

- Conform: Set the target framerate and the handle length in frames to match the requirements of the VFX facility receiving the material.

From the conform output, the workflow splits into two parallel paths:

- EXR path: The EXR node is preconfigured to transcode to ACES AP0 Linear. Output sequences are named automatically using the LOC Green marker in the EDL as the VFX shot name token. This can be changed to any other LOC or metadata field to match your naming convention.

- ProRes path: To produce display-referred proxy references, the workflow runs a full color pipeline before rendering. The Unicolor node transforms the source footage to the ACES AP1 ACEScct working color space, the CDL Grade node applies the extracted CDL values, and the ACES ODT node transforms the result to Rec.709. The ProRes node renders the final output using the same VFX shot name token as the EXR path.

- Delivery and notification: Configure the Signiant node with your Media Shuttle subscription and destination endpoint for EXR delivery. Set the MediaSilo node with your workspace credentials and target project for proxy review. Configure the Slack node with your webhook URL and target channel. A notification fires automatically when the MediaSilo upload completes.

- Finally, set the output path in the OTIO Creator node to generate a portable timeline referencing both the EXR sequences and the ProRes proxies, ready to open in any OTIO-compatible application.
